Descent: Memory II – 2008 – Hybrid on Canvas – 23″H x 30″W
I was intrigued by this angle of the upper falls on Northwest Bay Brook near Bolton Landing, NY, on Lake George. Perched somewhat precariously, I experienced many kinds of descents – of light, of water, of rocks appearing to hang in space, or trees that were barely clinging to the cliff. Initially I worked on several drawings and took many photographs. Eventually I created four images, one very large acrylic on canvas and three hybrid pieces, two different sizes on canvas and one on paper.
In this approach to a hybrid piece, the four main sections of photography are carefully integrated into the digital image so that the viewer is not sure of where painting and photography stop and start. I wanted a sense of vertigo from the method of depiction as well as the content.
